SculptuRo - Research platform on Roman sculpture in Gauls and Mediterranean Area

This research platform on Roman sculpture in Gauls and Mediterranean Area is the result of two databases on ancient sculpture, previously put online at the Centre Camille Jullian (CCJ) in 2006 : the NEsp (Nouvel Espérandieu) database was the documentary accompaniment to the traditional publications of the same name, and the RBR (Recueil des Bas-Reliefs) preserved and enhanced the archives of the former Recueil d'Emile Espérandieu. This project is in line with the continuity of the NEsp and RBR databases and also proposes a broader framework in terms of objectives and content. This undertaking, which has been part of the scientific programme of the CCJ for many years, was already in line with the European objectives of publishing and promoting archaeological archives, in collaboration with numerous museum or cultural institutions. The platform is designed from the collection of data to their publication, taking into account the issues of security, durability of data and integrating protocols, standards that ensure the interoperability and structuring of information in the context of open science. MySQL database accessible, without restriction, from a dedicated website (WordPress). The records present material information on the object, its function and the subject(s) represented, and also include a detailed analysis of the work signed by its author.

The entries are illustrated by one or more images taken, for the most part, from the Centre Camille Jullian's photo library and the campaigns of the laboratory's photographic service in partner museums. The image becomes one of the entry points and offers, thanks to the implementation of the IIIF standard advanced possibilities of use. The tool is based on the FAIR principles, standardised structuring of information to promote the exploitation and dissemination of data thanks to the use of open protocols, standards and formats (production of Dublin Core metadata, content harvestable by the OAI-PMH protocol, etc.) promoting interoperability, with, in particular, the use of the pivotal PACTOLS vocabulary of the partner Frantiq or other reference systems such as PériodO, geonames or pleiades.
